If there is one thing 2020 made clear, it is that you cannot take a single moment for granted. When Sarah and Alex reached out for another family session during their trip to Santa Barbara, I was thrilled. I have been photographing this sweet crew since before their son Elliott was born (check out their sweet maternity session.) Back then they were still wondering what parenthood would bring. As it turns out, it brought them the cutest kid on the beach.
We met at East Beach, one of the most popular beaches in Santa Barbara for family photos. With wide sand, palm trees, and views of the Stearns Wharf Pier, it feels like classic California in every direction. Our session was candid and relaxed. That is always how I love to capture lifestyle family photography.
Elliott started off a little shy. Soon the waves rolled in, the seaweed became his playground, and he lit up with joy. These are the kinds of moments I wait for, when kids forget the camera is there and just sink into being themselves.
This was one of my favorite Santa Barbara family photo sessions. It showed how much magic happens when families simply get to play together. Nothing was forced. No one had to hold a stiff pose. The beauty came from the natural connection between parents and kids.
East Beach did not disappoint. I love it because it has a playground for kiddos, a little outdoor shower area (a godsend for sandy toes), and restrooms that make sessions easy for families. The bike path and walkway along the ocean are nice and flat, perfect for walkers of all ages.
I am grateful for every chance I get to help families capture these moments. The splashing toes, the running giggles, and the warm Southern California breezes will live on in these images.
